Designers seek better ways to compare office furniture companies and products without greenwash, and some product manufacturers go beyond LEED® to set sustainability as their goal. The Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer's Association (BIFMA) and a group of government, academic, nonprofit, and business representatives worked together in an open and transparent process to develop a challenging sustainability standard that addresses the three aspects of sustainability (environmental, economic, and social). The standard includes criteria for evaluating materials, energy and atmosphere, human and ecosystem health, and corporate social responsibility impacts of the whole corporation, the manufacturing processes, and the products. Allsteel was among the first companies to certify products as meeting the requirements of the new standard.
